Thursday evening – Run and Social
What: City centre run with food afterwards
Where: Sugden Sports Centre, 114 Grosvenor Street, Manchester M1 7HL View Map
- Summer Route – Bridgewater Canal 9.4K
- Winter Route 1 – Alex Park 9.3K
- Winter Route 2 – Old Trafford 10.2K
Accessibility: Our summer route includes roads and also paths along the canal with some undulating and cobbled sections. Visibility is good and the runs are held when light (we usually switch routes when the clocks change). Our winter routes are both on roads and include crossings. Visibility is poorer as they usually take place in the dark under street lights. You can view our risk assessment of the routes here.
We start from the Sugden Sports Centre at 7pm so please try to arrive by 6.50pm and assemble to the side of the main entrance – one of the committee will always be there to welcome you and buddy you up with someone. We have three routes; over the spring and the summer, we run down the canal to Old Trafford and back (Summer Route). As this is an out and back route, you can run as far as you choose. Between October and March (Winter Routes), we alternate between two road / pavement based routes with street lighting to ensure safety. Both are as traffic free as possible, but given we live in the middle of Manchester, this isn’t exactly guaranteed! In the Winter months, we ask you wear hi-viz to ensure you remain as visible as possible.
We guarantee that all newcomers will have someone to run with them at their pace, so please don’t think you would be left to find your way on your own. Both the summer and winter routes are roughly 10k in distance. No matter how far or fast you want to go, you will have someone to run with.
We make no charge for our weekly run, all we ask is that you join the club by paying the annual membership if you want to run with us regularly. You can run with us for a couple of times for free to ensure we are the right club for you.
There are changing and shower facilities at the Sugden Sports Centre. You’ll need either a £1 coin or your own padlock for the lockers. Staff will give you access through the barriers to the lockers/showers if you say you are with Manchester Frontunners, and if you start to run regularly with us you should sign up for a (free) card to access the lockers and showers. Please speak to a member of the committee who will advise how to register.
After the run we meet up for some well deserved food and drink at The Deaf Institute – we get discount too, what’s not to like?!
Our Thursday evening run has always been the main MFR training run and the perfect opportunity to meet new people and enjoy food, drink and conversation afterwards. Come and join us!
